Depends on your requirement. For large enterprise application you can go for Java and for backend level programming like creating API, Searching, Indexing then you can go for Python

As per strong programming point of view Python is the better. But as per Job point of view JAVA is better and having rich set of 3rd parties libraries. JAVA is ever green technology and mostly customer prefer to opt JAVA into their enterprise application due to lots of features available into JAVA.

I would first recommend taking some good Linear Algebra course, you would need some intuitive understanding about concepts like linear leas squares, singular value decomposition, normal equations,etc....
