The prominent reason was to weaken Bengal as it was the emerging centre of Revolutionist. The reason stated by Lord Curzon was that it would enable British raj to administer the region conveniently. Britishers' actual motives were to break the unity of Indian revolutionaries against them socially and politically by using geographical division.
