Let go of the idea that your toddler has to be sitting in your lap or next to you, looking at the pages as you read. Read to him when he is sitting at the table having a snack or colouring or building with blocks. Find books about the things that particularly interest him -- if he loves dogs, trucks, or dinosaurs, focus on books featuring those things.
When you read, be silly and animated. Use funny voices and plenty of drama. Look for books that invite participation, like Going on a Bear Hunt or The Monster at the End of This Book. Just have fun and find as many ways as you can to encourage language growth, from talking and singing to reading and making up stories, and your son will be just fine.
