While it's common to see professional pianists watch their hands as they play, some of them will also close their eyes at times so they can better concentrate on the sound of the music.

He told me a story which may or may not be true but goes like this: Richter went with one of his students to see a Horowitz concert. At the end of the concert, Richter asked his student what he thought, to which the student responded «I can’t believe how a grand master like him can keep playing concerts and get away with making so many mistakes» To which Richter replied «It takes a grand master of his craft, to make mistakes sound so beautiful» My teacher loved to tell this story and I think it’s one the greatest lessons I had in life. read less
