PHP 7 introduced the Zend Engine 3.0, which resulted in a considerable reduction in memory consumption and substantial performance improvements. Benchmarks showed that PHP 7 could handle more requests per second and execute scripts faster compared to PHP 5, making it a more efficient and responsive choice for web applications. Another key difference is the introduction of scalar type declarations and return type declarations in PHP 7. In PHP 5, type hinting was available for objects and arrays, but PHP 7 extended this to include scalar types such as int, float, string, and bool. This addition enhances code clarity and helps catch potential type-related errors early in the development process. The inclusion of the Spaceship Operator (<=>), which simplifies the comparison of two expressions, and the introduction of the null coalescing operator (??) are other noteworthy features in PHP 7 that contribute to more concise and expressive code.
