In deference to the other two answers, I have a slightly different take. Both languages have fairly complete libraries. However, Java implements a greater number of higher level modeling and approach methods so you spend less time thinking about the nuts and bolts (like how to implement a hash table or a b-search) [Yes, yes, I know php has them… as an example.] So by its nature with inheritance and other features, the Java developer has leeway to create more elegant solutions. Now, to be fair, PHP is designed to work in its venue (web apps). Things that would be easy, simple, and downright taken for granted in PHP would be hard in Java. So, as all wise developers will tell you. Use the best tool for the job. Failing that, do what employed developers understand. What’s the best programming language? The one where you get a steady paycheck to do the implementation. read less

It won't be huge if you are talking about JSP and PHP programming. But yes Java has many component which are no where similar to php.
