There are many inferior languages out there but you have never heard of them They are inferior and consequently fail to gain market share. PHP has a strong market share because it is no way inferior. Take a look at the TIOBE rankings and you will see that it is ranked number 10: TIOBE - The Software Quality Company is something significant about the number 9 and 10 rankings: R and PHP. They are both specialised languages R is a language for data science and PHP is a language for web site development. This means that PHP is the second most popular special purpose language. R is more popular because data science is trending right now. Back when web development was trending PHP ranked at #3 above most of the general purpose languages. The current top 8 languages are all general purpose languages that can be turned to almost any task. Java and C# have both directly copied PHP’s Template driven approach with JSP and ASP yet still PHP remains.If we judge by the criteria of a general purpose language then PHP does appear inferior but this is not fair because PHP was never intended as such.PHP was intended to make the building of web applications cheap and productive. read less
