Of course! If you tune your schema and queries with the appropriate indexes, it can scale well. That having been said, as you scale, sometimes you surpass what a single server can do. Then strategies such as load balancing, caching, and sharding tend to be employed. NoSQL databases sometimes bake these kinds of features in to make scaling easier, but it comes at a price: namely, things like SQL joins, transactions, and guarantees of referential integrity tend to be missing from NoSQL platforms. This slows down development dramatically and makes auditing and reporting far more difficult. read less
