Phonics involves matching sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. Some rules of phonics include: Vowels Every word must contain a vowel. Vowels can make different sounds depending on where they are placed in a word. Long vowels When a word has two vowels, usually the first vowel says its name and the second vowel is silent. If a word has one vowel and it comes at the end of the word, the vowel makes it a long sound. K vs CK If the /k/ sound falls at the end of the word, and the /k/ is immediately preceded by a short vowel sound, it is spelled ck. If the /k/ sound is immediately preceded by a long vowel sound or consonant, it is spelled with k. Y rule If a vowel comes before the y, keep the y and add the suffix. If a consonant comes before the y, change the y to i and add the suffix. read less
