Shock is a topic where physiology and clinical medicine come together. Instead of simply memorizing the different types of shock, this masterclass will help you understand why blood pressure falls, how the body tries to compensate, and what ultimately happens to tissue perfusion.
This class is designed primarily for MBBS students who want to build a strong conceptual foundation in cardiovascular physiology and understand shock better for university examinations and competitive examinations.
We will cover:
- What exactly happens to cardiac output, blood pressure and tissue perfusion during shock
- The physiological basis of hypovolemic, cardiogenic, distributive and obstructive shock
- How venous return, preload, afterload and contractility influence cardiac output
- The role of the sympathetic nervous system, baroreceptor reflex and other compensatory mechanisms
- How compensation helps initially and why it may eventually become inadequate
- Important clinical correlations and exam-oriented concepts
The focus will be on understanding the physiology behind the clinical picture, so that you can reason through questions rather than rely entirely on memorization.
Prerequisite: A basic understanding of cardiovascular physiology is helpful, but you do not need advanced clinical knowledge.
