Rocks are naturally occurring masses of minerals that make up the Earth's crust. They are made up of different minerals, broken pieces of crystals, or broken pieces of rocks. Rocks can also be made of the shells of once-living animals, or of compressThere are three basic types of rocks, depending on how they were formed:
- Igneous: Formed when molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies.
- Sedimentary: Formed when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals from water.
- Metamorphic: Formed when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or reactive fluids. Rocks can be found in many places, including hills and mountains, plains and valleys, soil, and ocean basins.Rocks can be of different color, size, and texture. Some examples of rocks include granite, sandstone, limestone, and slate. The three main types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic:
