കാന്താ കടാക്ഷമേയും മന്ദഹാസവും ഹൃദയ സരസിജ.....
Does looking at the Malayalam script above feel intimidating? Do the looped letters and heavy vocabulary seem impossible to decode? Many people, even those with Malayali roots, struggle to read or understand the deeper, poetic layers of this beautiful language. They see the letters but cannot hear the music in them.
This class is designed to change that.
In this intensive session, we will strip away the complexity and focus on the building blocks of Malayalam. We will start from the very beginning—the alphabets (Swarangal and Vyanjanangal)—and move into basic word formation. My goal is to make the "tough" parts simple.
By the end of this class, you will learn:
-
The Script: How to identify and pronounce the unique rounded letters of Malayalam.
-
The Sounds: Mastering tricky pronunciations like 'Zha' (ഴ) and 'Nna' (ണ), which give the language its unique character.
-
Reading Basics: Techniques to break down complex words so you can read sentences fluently.
-
Understanding Meaning: We will revisit the complex lines above, and you will be surprised to find that you can now read the letters and begin to grasp their beauty.
Who is this class for?
-
Non-Malayalis wanting to learn a new language.
-
Malayalis who grew up outside Kerala and cannot read/write.
-
Anyone fascinated by Dravidian literature and culture.
Requirements: Please bring a notebook and a pen to practice writing the script along with me. Let’s unravel the mystery of Malayalam together.
