Course Overview

• History & Heritage: We begin with the evolution of the Sitar, tracing its roots from the ancient Veena and Persian Sehtar to its modern form popularized by legendary maestros.

• Gharana & Stylings: Students will explore the distinct "Gharanas" (schools of music), such as Imdadkhani and Senia Maihar, through live demonstrations highlighting unique tonal ornaments and stylistic nuances.

• Technical Foundations: The core focus remains on the "Baaj" (playing style). This includes the precise synchronization of both hands—the Mizrab (plectrum) striking techniques of the right hand and the intricate fretwork of the left.

• Raga Expression: Beyond notes, we delve into the emotional "Ras" of a Raga, teaching students how to breathe life into a performance through proper presentation and expression.

• Advanced Concepts: Detailed sessions will cover essential techniques:

  • Meend (glissando) and Gamak (oscillations)

  • Krintan (plucking/fingering patterns)

  • Palta (permutations) and Murchana (modal shift)
