My classes are interactive, patient and focused on making students comfortable with English Literature.
I don't expect a student to already know complicated literary terminology. I explain concepts from the ground up and encourage students to ask questions, discuss the text and express their own interpretation
.For Shakespeare, I particularly focus on translating difficult Elizabethan/Shakespearean English into simple modern English without losing the original meaning. For poetry, students learn to understand the poem rather than merely memorising its explanation. For stories and drama, we explore characters, themes, important incidents, motives and the writer's techniques.
My aim is to make students say, “I understand this,” rather than “I have memorised this".
A typical lesson may include reading the text, explaining difficult language, understanding the context, discussing the central idea, identifying literary devices and then practising how to turn that understanding into a well-structured school answer.
With consistent practice, students can become more confident readers, better writers and much more independent learners of English Literature.
