[A more detailed syllabus will be shared with you after enrolling in the course].
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
The aim of this course is modest: to introduce participants to the four fundamental elements of fiction writing in a structured manner and to help them study these elements through analysis and practice. The four fundamental elements are characterization, dialogue, point of view, and narrative structure. Through analyzing these four elements in various short stories and writing exercises, students will get a better understanding of these elements of fiction.
COURSEWORK:
Participants are expected to undertake the following workload for successful completion of the course:
- complete four writing activities
- write a 3,000 word story at the end of the course
- complete the assigned reading
- provide critique to their peers' writing
- participate in various modes of class discussion
COURSE DURATION:
The duration of the class time will be close to fifteen hours or more, which will be inclusive of the time devoted to following activities:
- explanation of the concept by me (your instructor)
- listening to audio/video material and discussing it with the class
- discussing the assigned reading with the class
- providing feedback/critique to a participant's work
- Q & A time with class and instructor
- getting personal feedback from the instructor through one-on-one video chat
The above duration DOES NOT include the time you will take to complete the writing exercises and write a full story.
BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS:
Please note that I am not claiming that after taking this course you will become a Writer or that you will become a published author. In fact, no creative writing teacher (no matter how accomplished) can make that claim. So considering the short duration of this course, I am setting a modest objective for myself as a teacher and I am hoping that you will do the same for yourself as a participant. The benefits of this course can stand out as follows:
- a more systematic and structured grasp of storytelling concepts
- getting the conceptual framework to analyze a story and its constituents
- learning storytelling concepts through writing exercises
- getting useful feedback on your strengths and weaknesses as a storyteller
- giving the participant a foundation to pursue advanced level creative writing courses
