Sujatha Rao has popularized the use of ethnic embroidery such as Kutch, Kasuti, Kantha, Chikan, Freestyle, Phulkari, Spanish Black, Zardosi, Mirror Work and many other embroidery stitches on sarees and other dress materials. She has developed innovative approaches to teaching the crafts that helped the students get a practical knowledge of combining tailoring, embroidery and fabric painting. A number of her students have ventured on their own and are commercially using this knowledge.

Sujatha Rao has conducted workshops on embroidery/handicrafts on Doordarshan (Podhigai TV) and Dakshin Chitra. She has also been invited as a Judge for various handicraft/ embroidery activities conducted in local schools and charitable organizations. She can communicate effectively in four languages – Tamil, Kannada, English and Hindi.

Sujatha Rao, a woman entrepreneur from Besant Nagar, is adopting the modern day technologies to teach students at their convenience at home through online training tools. All the student need is to have is a Computer, Web camera and internet connection. Many economically backward students have benefited from her teaching and started tailoring units commercially to increase their household income.
