'Editing – The Second Direction' is a comprehensive theory-based course designed to help aspiring filmmakers, editors, and storytellers understand the art and purpose of editing as the "second direction" of a film.
Rather than focusing on software operation or technical workflows, this course explores the creative, narrative, and psychological foundations of editing across the entire filmmaking process. Students will learn how editing influences storytelling from the earliest stages of pre-production, including script analysis, visual planning, shot design, and coverage strategies, through production considerations and into post-production decision-making. Through the study of editing principles, cinematic language, rhythm, pacing, continuity, montage, emotional manipulation, audience perception, and genre-specific approaches, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how editors shape meaning and transform raw footage into compelling narratives.
By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the theoretical knowledge necessary to think like an editor and collaborate effectively within any film production environment.
