In this class you will learn about the basic concepts of Trigonometry. This is very helful for class 10. Moreover, these topics are very important for board exams.
Here we are going to discuss about basic fucntions like sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and cotangent.
What is Trigonometry?
Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that studies relationships between the angles and sides of triangles—especially right-angled triangles
Right-Angled Triangle
A right-angled triangle has one 90° angle. The sides are:
-
Hypotenuse: The longest side, opposite the right angle.
-
Opposite: The side opposite the angle you're working with.
-
Adjacent: The side next to the angle (but not the hypotenuse).
Basic Trigonometric Ratios (SOH-CAH-TOA)
These are the three main functions in trigonometry:
Ratio | Name | Formula |
---|---|---|
sin(θ) | Sine | Opposite / Hypotenuse |
cos(θ) | Cosine | Adjacent / Hypotenuse |
tan(θ) | Tangent | Opposite / Adjacent |
Mnemonic:
SOH CAH TOA
Sine = Opp / Hyp
Cos = Adj / Hyp
Tan = Opp / Adj
Example
Suppose you have a right triangle:
-
Opposite side = 3
-
Adjacent side = 4
-
Hypotenuse = 5
(Yes, it’s a 3-4-5 triangle!)
Then:
-
sin(θ) = 3/5
-
cos(θ) = 4/5
-
tan(θ) = 3/4
