Pointer : Pointer is a variable which can hold the address of another variable and it points to that variable , You can initialize a pointer with NULL and if you are not initializing the pointer and accessing the pointer without allocating memory for it then it may cause segmentation fault as THis pointer may point to some random memory. So always init the pointer with NULL and put a check before accessing it . if (ptr != NULL) { /* Here perform your task*/ } Where we use pointers : pointers are basically used in two cases : 1) dynamicallly allocating memory 2) Passing value to a function by reference . Pointers are basic need of data structure , hence you should know about pointers . if your concepts are not cleared about pointers then its very difficult to learn data structure using C
