This resulted in a higher number of students scoring well, leading to a perceived "inflation" in ranks. To give you a better idea, the marks vs rank data for NEET UG 2023 showed that even with a score range of 300-400, the expected rank was around 4,50,000 to 5,50,000 ². This means that a lot of students scored within this range, making the competition for ranks even tougher. It's worth noting that the NEET UG 2023 exam had over 20 lakh candidates, and the cutoff scores were relatively high, with the general category cutoff being 720-137 ². This further emphasizes the competitive nature of the exam and the impact of the "rank inflation" on the students' ranks.
