Chapter 9 - The Living Organisms: Characteristics and Habitats

In Class 6 Science Chapter 9, you will learn-

Section 9.1 – This section lists the animals found in forests, mountains, desert or the sea through an activity. The main idea behind this is to introduce the different types of surroundings in which animals are found and types of animals.

Section 9.2 – This section deals with terrestrial and aquatic habitats. It also discusses the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. It throws light on the idea of adaptation in animals due to which they are able to survive the climatic conditions in a particular habitat, for instance, camels have hooves to walk in the deserts, fishes have gills to breathe underwater, and so on and so forth. This section also explains certain changes that animals undergo in order to survive in a particular climatic region.

Section 9.3 – This section takes you through different habitats and enlists the animals found there. These habitats are Terrestrial- Deserts, Mountain regions, and Grasslands and Aquatic- Oceans, and Ponds and Lakes. The lifestyle and habits of these organisms that make them fit for the habitat are also discussed.

Some examples of organisms living in the mentioned habitats are given below:

• Deserts- Organisms like camels, and rats and snakes who live in burrows. Plants like cacti.

• Mountain regions- Organisms like snow leopard, yak and mountain goat. Trees like pine and spruce.

• Grasslands- Organisms like lion and deer.

• Oceans- Organisms like dolphins, fish, squids, and octopus.

• Lakes and Ponds- Aquatic plants, frogs, small fish.

Section 9.4 – This section discusses the characteristic features of different organisms and tells their different types. Under several headings, this section completely explains and answers the following questions- Do all organisms need food? , Do all organisms show growth? , Do all organisms respire? , Do all organisms respond to stimuli? , Do all organisms move? , and Do all organisms reproduce their own kind? This section throws light on the vital processes that every organism performs for survival, for example, movement, excretion, respiration and reproduction. Diagrams and activities are given throughout the section to explain to you everything clearly.
