Chapter 7 - The P Block Elements

The chapter ‘P Block Elements’ is a part of the P Block Elements Class 12 NCERT Solutions in the Chemistry syllabus. What do you know about the P Block elements? If your teacher taught this in class, you must be knowing that the P Block elements are those elements that are found on the right side of the periodic table. These elements contain metals, nonmetals and metalloids such as boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine families along with noble gases. These elements have p-orbitals as well as the noble gases, but the noble gases are non-reactive and have full p-orbitals. The elements have the group numbers 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 and on their outermost shell, they have 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 electrons, respectively. The p-block elements have a general configuration, and that is ns2np1-6.

Let’s have a look at all the topics in Class 12 Chemistry Chapter 7: The P-Block Elements:

7.1 Group 15 elements

7.2 Dinitrogen

7.3 Ammonia

7.4 Oxides in Nitrogen

In class 12 Chemistry Chapter 7 NCERT solutions, you will learn –

In the Class 12 Chemistry Chapter 7 NCERT Solutions, you will learn about some of the essential properties of P block elements. Each of the sections has discussed group 15, 16, 17 and 18 elements in detail. Some of the essential features that you will find in the p block elements class 12 NCERT solution are:

  • Electron Affinity

  • Metallic Character

  • Oxidation State

Section 7.1 – 7.9: In these sections, the elements of group 15 are discussed in detail. There are many subsections of section 7.1, where the properties of group 15 are discussed in detail, such as the occurrence, electronic configuration, physical and chemical properties, etc.

There are five elements in group 15, namely Bismuth, Nitrogen, Arsenic, Moscovic and Antimony.

Section 7.10 – 7.17: These sections cover the group 16 elements of the P Block Elements of the NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Chemistry Chapter 7. They show the maximum oxidation state. The Group 16 elements have general electronic configuration ns2np4. The allotropic form of Oxygen is O3.

Section 7.18 – 7.22: Group 17 consists of the elements Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Fluorine. They are found in the combined state only, and thus they are highly reactive. In this section, you will learn that Sulphur forms several allotropes and a number of oxoacids when combined with oxygen.

Section 7.23: This section is the last in the chapter, and it consists of the group 18 elements which are the noble gases in the periodic table. You will find more details online in P Block Elements Class 12 NCERT Solutions pdf.
