This chapter teaches you the various aspects of an object in motion. It also explains the relevance, need and importance of speed, distance, etc. At UrbanPro, you will be provided with Motion in a Straight Line Class 11 NCERT Solutions that will help you ace your examinations.
Let us take a look at the subtopics of Class 11 Physics, Chapter 3, Motion in a Straight Line.
1.1 Introduction
1.2 Position, path length and displacement
1.3 Average velocity and average speed
1.4 Instantaneous velocity and speed
1.5 Acceleration
1.6 Relative velocity
Section 1.1 – In this section, you will learn that a change in position of an object over time is known as motion. It can be as simple as walking or riding a bicycle. In order to study ‘motion’ in a better way, the concepts of acceleration and velocity have been developed. The motion of objects along a straight line is known as rectilinear motion. In this chapter, we are going to focus mainly on the rectilinear motion.
Section 1.2 – This section explains that in order to specify the position of an object, a reference point is needed on the x, y and z axes. The point at which these axes intersect is known as the origin. This system of representation of an object’s position with the help of x, y and z coordinates is known as the coordinate system. You will also learn that if one of these coordinates changes with time, it is said that the object is in motion. The path length is the total distance travelled by an object when moving from one point to the other. Displacement is the shortest possible path between two points. Section 1.3 – This section deals with the amount of change in position of an object concerning time is known as the average velocity of the object. It is a vector quantity as it depends on the direction.
On the other hand, the average speed of an object is the total distance travelled by it, divided by the interval of time in which the said distance was covered. It is a scalar quantity.
Section 1.4 – In this section, you will learn what the instantaneous velocity of an object is. You will come to know that instantaneous speed refers to the speed of an object at a given point or instant of time.
Section 1.5 – You have earlier studied that the velocity of an object might keep on changing in the course of its motion. In this section, you will learn that this rate of change of velocity is known as acceleration. It can be both positive as well as negative.
Section 1.6 – You might have noticed that when travelling on a train, a train coming from the opposite direction appears to be a lot faster than a train going in the same direction as the one you are in. In this section, you will study the reasons behind such instances. You will also learn what is meant by relative velocity.
