Literature Chapter 11 - The Proposal

The 11th chapter for the literature section of English for 10th standard is The Proposal, a short story by Anton Chekov, a Russian writer who is famous for his short stories.

Prologue

The Proposal was originally titled, “A Marriage Proposal”. This is a one-act place and a farce which was written by a short story writer and dramatist from Russia, named Anton Chekhov. It was written between the years 1888 to 1889.

The play describes the proneness of rich and wealthy families to seek ties between themselves and other wealthy and rich families so as to increase their estates by encouraging marriages that makes sense economically. Ivan Lomov is a wealthy neighbour of Stepan Chubukov, who is also wealthy. He came to seek the hand of Chubukov’s twenty-five-year-old daughter Natalya. All three of them start to quarrel over petty topics such as their pet dogs. The writer through his work displays how the rich want to marry off their children into other rich families with a common aim to increase their family riches and wealth.

 Summary

The Proposal is a one-act play, which begins with a young man named Lomov. Lomov presents a marriage proposal to his neighbour’s daughter named, Natalya. Before he could present the proposal to Natalya, an argument about the Oxen Meadows arose between them. The father of Natalya, Chubukov who was Lomov’s neighbour, also joined them in the heated argument. After they ended their argument on this topic, soon after they began another argument on a new topic about whose dog was the better one. In the meantime, the proposal remains forgotten until Lomov palpitates and falls off due to the excitement and tension of the discussions and Chubukov instantly puts her daughter’s hands in Lomov’s for marriage. But they continue with their quarrelling even after that.

Characters

The characters of the one-act play are:

Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov: a landowner and Lomov’s neighbour.

Natalya Stepanovna: Chubukov’s twenty-five years old daughter.

Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov: A neighbour of Chubukov, a large and hearty, but very suspicious, landowner.
