The poem, “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost elaborates on the possible idea that the world can end in two ways – by either fire or ice. This poem expresses that fire and ice both pertain to the self-destructive emotions of humans – ‘fiery’ desire and ‘icy’ hatred respectively. Robert Frost has artistically interwoven human emotions as elements that can be destructive if not controlled by a person; in other words, the poem states the philosophy that we let our emotions rule us and if not controlled, they will surely destroy everything including us.

Explanation 1: In the poem “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost, the poet has explained that the world can end in two ways – by fire or by ice. Both of these factors pertain to the human emotions and desires that are built over time inside a person. The poet describes that if these emotions are not controlled by a person, then it can lead to destructive consequences. Fire pertains to human desires that force people to act instinctively based on their desires. All activities of a person can be related to their own innate desires that drive their actions to achieve the fulfilment of said desires. Ice refers to the perspective a person has towards the society at large. It relates to the negative viewpoints that a person holds towards others in a society like a harshness, coldness, and hatred.

Explanation 2: In the poem, the poet Robert Frost has said that the world can come to an end in two ways – either by fire or by ice. Fire refers to the more instinctive actions that are taken by an individual, that can be greed, avarice, lust. Ice refers to the more innate urges and inclinations of a human being towards others in the society, like coldness, insensitivity, intolerance and hatred. All these emotions of a person have the capability to change their attitude and perspective towards something or someone. These emotions can be the guiding factor of the person to commit destructive acts to justify their own desires and viewpoints.

This rhyming style has been implemented in this poem by the poet in order to bring about and present the contrasting elements of both fire and ice. This has been structured by the poet purposefully because of these contrasting elements of fire and ice that have the capability to drive the destructive actions of a human and bring forth the destruction of the world.
