Dust of Snow NCERT Solutions

A short and simple poem, yet with a profound meaning. The crow, the dust of snow and the hemlock tree have given a change of mood to the port’s heart. Ironically, the poet feels happy when the ‘dust of snow’ falls on him, and he thinks that the wasted part of his day was saved. This signifies how the beauty of nature can have a soothing and calming effect on the minds of people and make them happier, even in dark and depressing times.

Explanation:

“Dust of Snow” is a small particle of the snow also known as a snowflake. The size of the particles made the poet refer to them as “dust”. The poet was having a bad day, but the sudden shower of the snowflakes changed his mood. He wanted to start anew as he felt refreshed.

Robert Frost, in his poem, presents nature very differently. Birds that are usually mentioned in the poem are peacock, sparrow and nightingale. But when it comes to crow, we often use it as a negative reference. They are black and have a very harsh voice, which is a symbol to be a bad omen. Thinking of a crow brings a depressing image in our mind.

As we know, trees are defined as our life. They absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, which is referred to as absorbing negative energy and giving positive energy. But there are some poisonous trees, like the hemlock tree. The poet wanted to indicate his mood, which is not of happy tone, that’s why he chose hemlock tree instead of maple, oak or pine tree.

Sadness and sorrow in this poem are represented by the crow and the hemlock tree, respectively. The poet uses these ‘negative’ creatures as the bearer of positivity and will power that made his day and mindset better. He tried proving those positive thoughts through the poem that made us understand that the world is not how we perceive it, but is how we want to perceive it. That’s why the crow, the hemlock tree and the dust of snow together stood for happiness and made his day better.
