For graphite pencils and coloured pencils, grab a mechanical sharpener. The best graphite pencil sharpener is a manual or mechanical sharpener, these sharpeners are also the best for coloured pencils too (with the exception of woodless pencils, it's best to use a hobby knife for those).

However, for thicker or specialized pencils like charcoal or pastel pencils, it's best to use a sharpener specifically designed for those types of pencils. These sharpeners have larger holes and can handle the softer leads of charcoal and pastel pencils without breaking them. Just make sure to sharpen gently and rotate the pencil to get a nice, even point for your drawing. read less
