What does atomic radius and ionic radius really mean to you?

Atomic radius is the distance from the centre of the nucleus of an atom to the outermost shell whereas ionic radius is the effective distance from the nucleus of an ion to the point to which it has the influence in the ionic bond.

SiCl4 undergoes rapid hydrolysis because of the following reasons- 1) steric hindrance- of Clicking blocks the C atom and prevents water from attacking whereas Si is larger so it is more susceptible to attack by the nucleophile. 2)lack of low lying d-orbitals of C atom. 3)C-Cl bond is less polarized... ...more

SiCl4 undergoes rapid hydrolysis because of the following reasons-

1) steric hindrance- of Clicking blocks the C atom and prevents water from attacking whereas Si is larger so it is more susceptible to attack by the nucleophile.

2)lack of low lying d-orbitals of C atom.

3)C-Cl bond is less polarized than Si-Cl bond as the difference in electronegativity is smaller  in C-Cl than Si-Cl.

Suggest reason why the B-F bond lengths in BF3 (130 pm) and BF (143 pm) differ.

In BF3, B atom is sp2 hybridised and it has One unhybridised empty 2p atomic orbital. This empty 2p orbital overlaps sideways from both the sides with fully filled 2p atomic orbital of F atom to form dative pΠ-pΠ bond that reduces the bond length.
