generally been good, with lots of support from other members of staff, but that’s probably not what you want to hear. It can be stressful, but again look after yourself. Remember to step back from the job at the end of the day and give yourself some time. Remember your aim initially is for competence, not mastery. Students will encounter one best teacher they ever had, but that does not have to be you, when you start out. My point here is that you are in for the long haul, so pace yourself. A lot of teachers start by thinking about how they have been taught, and what their best teachers did, and try to emulate that. This is not ideal, the weakness in that approach is that your class group are not twenty or thirty copies of you. They all would need different best teachers, and you cant do that when you start out. It takes patience. A week into teaching a particular group when I went into the class room they were engaged in drawing a big diagram on the board. It was an outline of the local gang structure in the town. One of them turned to me and said, you wont last three weeks. I let them finish, and then went on with my math class. I didn’t even look at the diagram, or take a picture with my phone. I think that may have been a test. We got on fine after that.
