When my maid showed an interest in learning English, I sought out Ms. Kanaz thinking she would groom her well. But the first day itself turned to be a nightmare. Ms Kanaz rebuked and humiliated her for lack of English speaking ability. My maid returned to me in tears and giving up on the whole idea of learning. Is this how we as a society will empower the underpriviledged by mocking them? Is this how we will be achieving social inclusion by creating walls for a woman who comes from a different strata in the society? As a nation, we should be encouraging such women. Living in Mumbai where Mulgi shikhli pragati zhali is a popular way of thinking, people like Ms Kanaz have such perceptions.Instead of empathy for the poor girl and regret for her behavior, she has been attacking me. Ms Kanaz for someone teaching a gentleman's language and running an etiquette coaching class, a little humility is perhaps the first lesson you should inculcate in yourself and others!
