Harshit Tiwari

I bring hands-on teaching experience gained during my PhD, when I served as a teaching assistant under the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship at IIT Roorkee. In this role, I delivered lectures and conducted both classroom courses and laboratory sessions at my host institute as well as at other academic institutions.

At the College of Engineering Roorkee, within the Department of Civil Engineering, I taught three courses. The first, "Energy and Environmental Engineering" (992005), covered environmental ecosystems, natural resources, pollution, energy conservation and auditing, renewable energy, and policy frameworks such as Namami Gange, MNRE, CPCB, UKPCB, the SDGs, and COP-26. The second, "Biological Wastewater Treatment," focused on growth kinetics, activated sludge processes (ASP), sequencing batch reactors (SBR), and case studies of Uttarakhand's state sewage treatment plants. The third, "Environmental Engineering-II" (BCET-701), gave students a comprehensive overview of wastewater and solid waste management, including water chemistry, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes, and industrial waste management.

At IIT Roorkee itself, within the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy, I taught two laboratory-based courses. In "Integrated Management of Water Bodies" (HRE-523), I guided students through water and wastewater quality analysis using biological, physical, and chemical methods, along with microbial culturing techniques such as media preparation, sterilization, and Gram staining. In "Environmental Management of Rivers & Lakes" (HRE-527), I taught soil characterization methods, including permeability, porosity, liquid and plastic limits, and grain size distribution, along with sediment analysis and demonstrations of the institute's latest instrumentation.

Beyond formal coursework, I have mentored dissertation students from institutes across India. I guided Ishika Agarwal, an IIT Roorkee Spark Fellow from MNNIT Allahabad, on the impacts of microplastics on microalgae growth in wastewater, a project that earned her the Best Poster Award at IIT Roorkee in 2023. I supervised Prashant Kumar from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology on wastewater treatment using algal culture, and Rafhi Vadapalli from IIT Roorkee on energy recovery from sewage sludge through anaerobic digestion. I also mentored Nidhi Lodhi from Banasthali Vidyapith on biohydrogen production from an algal-bacterial consortium cultivated in low-strength wastewater, work that was recognized as an Outstanding M.Sc. Dissertation in 2024.
