If Python is slow compared to other languages, then why are we still using it?

"Python is slow" is a misunderstanding. For instance, if you use some of the most popular libraries (like Numpu, Scipy, Panda, etc.), then is too fast compared to core Python code. It is because of the most libraries are written in best language for the different platform. For instance, most code of... ...more
"Python is slow" is a misunderstanding. For instance, if you use some of the most popular libraries (like Numpu, Scipy, Panda, etc.), then is too fast compared to core Python code. It is because of the most libraries are written in best language for the different platform. For instance, most code of Numpy is written in C/C++. In addition, there are many python tools for optimal utilization of the underlying hardware. For instance, Theano/Theanets/Keras takes code in python, and they "convert" your coding in the best way possible for your system. It can use underlying GPU, multiple processors, or cluster without much efforts. Because of this, you don't have to learn C, C++, CUDA, OpenCV, etc. Python is very popular for it's simplistic and readability. Because of simplicity, it's popular in search. A researcher can write modify his/her experiment quickly. Readability is one of the important factors in an industry environment as maintenance of software takes 60-80% of the total effort. In addition to above, what else one needs? Good libraries for various tasks? There are lots of libraries. You name the task, and most likely there will be a library. This makes the development of software and experiment-setup for research very easy.
