To be very basic, Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application, and Microsoft Access is a relational database application. Spreadsheets work with limited sets of flat records to create charts, perform data analysis and lookups. You use a spreadsheet to use its functions with data. A relational database links tables into one database. You can create tables with selected fields across tables. It can contain more records than a spreadsheet and organizes data more efficiently for faster sorts and script runs. Try running a line by line process with a large spreadsheet, and it will take some time. You can use MS Access to access other databases provided. You can get snapshots of large databases with "DAO" to work with just a small set of data on your desktop. One application is that you can get a massive database of UPCs online. The files are too big for Excel. With Access, you can get the US products for example and reduce it down to either a merged Access table or Excel sized table. I hope this helps! read less
