Smoke testing is a preliminary software testing process that's performed early in the development cycle to identify and fix major issues before they become more difficult to correct. It's necessary because it helps save time and resources by ensuring that the software's main functions work properly before it's tested further or released to the public. Here are some reasons why smoke testing is important: Catch bugs early Smoke testing helps identify major issues early in the development cycle. Save time and resources Smoke testing is a quick and cheaper way to ensure that the software's main functions work properly. Avoid being sent back and forth between teams If errors are found during smoke testing, the build is rejected and returned to the QA team. Validate software stability Smoke testing verifies the stability of the software build for further testing. Ensure software quality Smoke testing ensures that the software program works well in all areas and is of superior quality. Smoke testing is broad but shallow, and it should at least touch every software module. It may contain around 25–50 individual tests. The term "smoke test" comes from electronic hardware testing, where you plug in a new board and turn on the power. If you see smoke coming from the board, you turn off the power and don't need to do any more testing. read less
