Smoke testing is a software testing method that verifies if a new software build is ready for further testing or release to the public. It's performed early in the testing lifecycle, and is also known as build verification or confidence testing. Smoke testing is performed when: New features are added to the software Before code is committed to a repository Before other intensive tests are run Smoke testing is important because it: Helps find critical issues early, Reduces time and resource costs, Makes the application more robust, and Reduces integration issues. Smoke testing is performed by QA teams, developers, or a combination of both. The testing process involves executing a set of predetermined test cases that cover critical features of the software. For example, for an online shopping platform, smoke tests might include: Verifying user registration and login processes Checking the product catalog and search functionality Adding items to the cart and proceeding to checkout The term "smoke test" comes from electronic hardware testing, where a new board is plugged in and turned on. If smoke comes from the board, the power is turned off, and no further testing is needed. read less
