No, they're different: Smoke tests validate overall basic functionality, while sanity tests check specific changes.

When performed Smoke testing is performed early in the software development lifecycle or after a new build, while sanity testing is performed after major changes or additions to the software. Documentation Smoke testing is documented or scripted, while sanity testing is not. Who performs Software developers or testers perform smoke testing, while testers alone perform sanity testing. Type of testing Smoke testing is a subset of acceptance testing, while sanity testing is a subset of regression testing.
