In its very basic form, people use ping to check if a computer is available over the network and reachable. Or to see if your computer has network connectivity. ping -c3 google.com This will ping the Google's server by sending 3 packets and then you will get result in the form of how much packets were lost. If you can't reach the computer or address it generally means either your computer is not connected to internet or the computer you are trying to ping to is not available. Netstat on other hand gives you ability to get information on network activity that is taking place on your computer. This way you can see how many connections you have established, to what addresses and ports, etc. Note: this is no way exhaustive explanation of what these commands can do but I think you sort of get the idea. read less
