Hello Shobhitha :-). Not Linux specifically, but Unix systems in general, sure. They are important in many fields. If you can’t find your way around Unix systems you shut yourself out of almost all server side work (although a little is done of MS OSes, and a small buy valuable part on older mainframe Ones). So computer engineers absolutely should. Some people think CS should stick to the more theoretical “sciency” parts of computers. If you think CS should teach noting practical, then you can leave out Unix in general. Personally I think some practical things should be taught, plus as Linux/FreeBSD/NetBSD are all Open Source OSes they could make great platforms for studying all kind of things. VM page replacement algorithms and disk storage systems and such. So they make great experimentation platforms. As a practical matter if your University skimped, go pick it up. Do some command line work. It is enlightening. Do some server work, it too is mind expanding. Go mess with the VM subsystem it is…um… frustrating and fraught with danger. Also enlightening though.
