1) Start yourself Using Linux distro like Ubuntu or CentOS
2) Get familiarity with command line
3) Practice what ever you do with Windows
4) try to mini System Tasks Driver settings etc
5) understand Linux File System and permissions
6) Install and configure Database , web servers
7) Then Join a course.
8) Speedup learning..

Now a days most of development use Linux as a platform, most system admin use linux for providing services, hosting website, DNS server etc. so it is the good choice to learn linux. even china use only linux base os and application. and indian gov also move towards Linux base OS. Because of Limitations in The MBR(Master Boot Record) why because the size of MBR is 512B only ..
