TN 9th maths Set Theory EX :1.4
Sivaraj
In an examination 50% of the students passed in Mathematics and 70% of students passed in Science while 10% students failed in both subjects. 300 students passed in
at least one subject. Find the total number of students who appeared in the examination,
if they took examination in only two subject?
Solution:
Given
Passed percentage in M=50%, S=70%,
300 students passed in atleast one subject.
10% failed in both subject.
so remaining 90% passed atleast in one subject.
n(M∪S)=n(M)+n(S)-n(M∩S)
90%=50%+70%-n(M∩S)
n(M∩S)=30%
so, 30% of X=300
X=1000.
The total number of students is 1000.

Five Sure shot tips to succeed in Board Examination
Dhananjay Dikshit
I abide by fundamental rule of teaching that says that need of every student is different from the other.Hence,...
Every student can get certain benefits in case he adheres to the following five tips while preparing for the examination.
1) Read a chapter/lesson/topic thoroughly at least 3-4 times after it is discussed in the class. You may then refer to any notes/suggestion papers. Write down your doubts for help from tutor/teacher. Don't rush to any teacher with doubts before this activity.
2) Prepare your lessons/chapters/topics by writing the answers yourself to questions from the textbook/reference books/last few years examination questions/question bank.
3) Never start reading a new chapter a day before any examination. It will lead you more shaken and confused. Be patient and revise already prepared topics.
4)It is always helpful to read 3-4 hours every day for the entire year rather than 10-12 hours few days before the examination as the human brain is adaptive to absorbing new information and retaining it when it is gradual rather than abrupt.
5) Never inquire about what/how your friends have prepared their lessons on the eve of the examination.
It makes you more uneasy, nervous, add no value and instead impacts your mental balance.
