Each raga in Carnatic music is defined by unique melodic patterns that give it a distinct identity, mood, and emotional flavor, known as "raga bhava." These patterns include specific sequences of notes in the ascending (arohanam) and descending (avarohanam) scales, usage of particular swaras with characteristic gamakas (ornamentations), and unique phrases called "prayogas." For example, Raga Kalyani uses all seven notes with a bright and majestic feel, while Raga Bhairavi includes oscillating gamakas and evokes devotion. Some ragas have vakra (zigzag) patterns, asymmetric scales, or omit certain notes. These elements combine to create a raga’s signature musical personality and expressive potential.
