Lencho is the main character in the short story "A Letter to God" by the Mexican author Gregorio López Fuentes. He is a poor, hardworking farmer who lives in a small village. In the story, Lencho’s crops are destroyed by a hailstorm, and he becomes desperate because he believes his family will starve. Trusting in God’s kindness, he writes a letter to God asking for 100 pesos to help him survive. The local post office employees, upon reading the letter, decide to help by collecting money among themselves, but Lencho believes that only God could have sent the money and is angry when he discovers the amount is less than what he asked for.
Lencho represents blind faith and the human desire for help in times of hardship. His character also reflects themes of hope, human nature, and the relationship between individuals and higher powers.
