Q1(ii):
Determine whether each of the following relations are reflexive, symmetric and transitive: (ii) Relation $R$ in the set $N$ of natural numbers defined as $R = \{(x, y) : y = x + 5$ and $x < 4\}$

Solution :

Step 1: Formal Definition of the Set and Relation

Given the set of natural numbers $N = \{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...\}$. The relation $R$ is defined on $N$ such that:

$R = \{(x, y) : y = x + 5 \text{ and } x < 4\}$

Since the condition $x < 4$ must hold for $x \in N$, the possible values for $x$ are $\{1, 2, 3\}$. We calculate the corresponding values of $y$ using the equation $y = x + 5$:

  • If $x = 1$, $y = 1 + 5 = 6$. So, $(1, 6) \in R$.
  • If $x = 2$, $y = 2 + 5 = 7$. So, $(2, 7) \in R$.
  • If $x = 3$, $y = 3 + 5 = 8$. So, $(3, 8) \in R$.

Thus, the relation in roster form is: $R = \{(1, 6), (2, 7), (3, 8)\}$.

Step 2: Testing for Reflexivity

A relation $R$ on a set $A$ is reflexive if $(a, a) \in R$ for all $a \in A$. [Definition of Reflexive Relation].

Here, $A = N$. Consider $a = 1$. Clearly, $(1, 1) \notin R$ because $1 \neq 1 + 5$. Similarly, $(2, 2) \notin R$ and $(3, 3) \notin R$.

Conclusion: The relation $R$ is not reflexive.

Step 3: Testing for Symmetry

A relation $R$ is symmetric if $(a, b) \in R \implies (b, a) \in R$ for all $a, b \in A$. [Definition of Symmetric Relation].

We have $(1, 6) \in R$. For the relation to be symmetric, $(6, 1)$ must be in $R$. However, $(6, 1) \notin R$ because $6 \not< 4$ (failing the condition $x < 4$).

Conclusion: The relation $R$ is not symmetric.

Step 4: Testing for Transitivity

A relation $R$ is transitive if $(a, b) \in R$ and $(b, c) \in R \implies (a, c) \in R$ for all $a, b, c \in A$. [Definition of Transitive Relation].

To test for transitivity, we check if there exist elements such that $(a, b) \in R$ and $(b, c) \in R$. In our set $R = \{(1, 6), (2, 7), (3, 8)\}$, there is no ordered pair that ends with the same value that begins another ordered pair (i.e., there is no $b$ such that $(a, b) \in R$ and $(b, c) \in R$).

When the antecedent of the conditional statement $((a, b) \in R \land (b, c) \in R)$ is false for all elements, the implication is considered vacuously true. [Logic: Vacuous Truth in Relations].

Conclusion: The relation $R$ is transitive.

1 2 3 6 7 8 R = {(1,6), (2,7), (3,8)}

Final Solution: The relation $R$ is neither reflexive nor symmetric, but it is transitive.

Hello! I’m Anwar, a certified mathematics tutor with over 10 years of experience helping students excel at every stage, from Primary, Middle School to High School and University level. My passion is to make math clear, engaging, and enjoyable for learners worldwide. I specialize in teaching Maths to students from Grade 8 to Grade 12 across multiple curricula including IGCSE/Cambridge, IB (MYP), GCSE, CBSE and ICSE. I focus on concept clarity and exam-oriented preparation, helping students understand not just how to solve questions, but how to approach them logically. My teaching approach is highly interactive and student-centric. Each session begins with clear explanation of concepts, followed by strategies to decode questions and step-by-step solving methods. Students actively participate during the class and solve questions along with me, which allows me to check their understanding in real time. Once the concepts are tested, students solve questions independently while I closely monitor their working and provide instant feedback wherever required. This method helps students strengthen accuracy, speed and confidence, and is especially effective for students who feel weak or anxious in Maths and Science. I offer one-to-one personalized tutoring with a minimum class duration of one hour, ensuring complete attention and customized learning for every student.
