Choosing an optional subject is one of the most crucial and fate deciding aspect of UPSC prepration. As the syllabus of optional papers is static and questions are often repeated over the years, it is very scoring. Hence if you chose a good subject chances of your selection go up several folds. There are certain things that shoud be kept in mind while selecting your optional subject: BACKGROUND: Your educational background matters the most in deciding your optional subject. Try to select those subjects that you have studied in your graduation days, ( If at all you studied in your grad. days :D ) Lenghth of the syllabus: As there are no breaks during upsc mains exam. so select a subject that can be revised within a day or so. TRENDS: Some subjects are scoring in nature while others are not. look at recent trends before you pick up a particular subject. Interests: Go to WWW.UPSC.GOV.IN read the whole syllabus for the subject u want to select. if you find it interesting . go for it. Coming to law as an optional subject. decide this depending upon above mentioned facts. law is a very scoring subject but also dynamic. you have to stay updated. remember lots of recent case laws etc. hence take an informed decision. hope it answers your question. For a student who wants to appear for a law entrance exam, the coaching shall include basic legal Knowle for certain chosen laws, general knowledge, basic English and math. For leg al knowledge it is advisable that a student attends law classes because while other topics are more or less within the knowledge of the students, law is not. Hope this helps. Will be glad to provide more information if you want. All the best!
