D. V. Subba Lakshmi

I teach Carnatic music, specializing in both Veena and vocal training, and I have been teaching and training students for around 25 years. Music has been an important part of my journey for many years, and my experience as both a teacher and performing artist has helped me develop a practical understanding of how students learn and grow in Carnatic music. I enjoy helping learners build their musical abilities while developing a deeper appreciation for this beautiful traditional art form.

I completed my Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) from Andhra University in 1995. Along with my academic education, I pursued formal training in Carnatic music and completed a Diploma in Veena (Carnatic Music) from Potti Sree Ramulu Telugu University in 1997. This specialised training gave me a strong foundation in Veena and Carnatic music and has supported me throughout my journey as a musician and teacher.

Over the years, I have gained extensive practical experience as a Veena and vocal artist. I have performed on many stages, which has helped me develop confidence, discipline, musical expression, and a deeper understanding of performance. These experiences have also influenced the way I teach, as I believe that learning music should involve not only understanding the technical aspects but also developing the confidence to express oneself through music.

Teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of my musical journey. During my 25 years of teaching experience, I have worked with students at different levels and supported them as they develop their musical skills. I understand that every student has a different pace of learning, and I try to make my classes comfortable and encouraging so that learners can gradually improve their technique, understanding, and confidence.

In my Veena classes, I focus on helping students develop a strong foundation while becoming comfortable with the instrument and its techniques. For vocal training, I work on developing the student's understanding and practice of Carnatic music in a systematic manner. I believe regular practice is an important part of musical learning, and I encourage students to build consistency while paying attention to accuracy, rhythm, expression, and overall musicality.

My approach to teaching is patient and student-focused. I try to explain concepts clearly and give students sufficient opportunities to practise and improve. Along with technical development, I want my students to enjoy the learning process and develop a genuine interest in Carnatic music. My experience as a performing artist also allows me to guide students on aspects of musical presentation and confidence that can be valuable as they progress.

I offer both online and offline classes, depending on the student's requirements and convenience. Whether a student is beginning their Carnatic music journey or already has some experience and wants to improve their Veena or vocal skills, I aim to provide structured guidance based on their level and learning goals. After many years as a musician and teacher, I continue to find great satisfaction in sharing my knowledge and helping students discover their own connection with Carnatic music.
