The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell.
The mitochondria are thought to be an ancient form of a bacterial cell that one of our distant ancestors absorbed but failed to destroy. Instead of infecting the cell, the two developed a symbiosis, and now are interdependent on one another to the point where they are now basically another ‘organ’ in the cell’s body. They even have their own unique DNA, which is in a circular plasmid, not unlike a bacteria’s.
As for their function, they actually differ very slightly from cell type to cell type (a liver mitochondrion looks very different from, say, one in your blood cells), they all perform their primary function by facilitating the breaking-down of glucose, and storing its energy in AdenosineTriPhosphate, or ATP - the body’s energy storage molecule.
If you think of ADP/ATP as the body’s batteries, then the mitochondrion is it’s charging stations.
On a side note, some mitochondria also act as temporary storage for Calcium ions, which are integral for various signalling molecules as well as neural activity.
