About the Teaching-Learning Programme

At New Vistas, P Das has been teaching University of Calcutta MA English and BA English Honors students for two decades. His classes combine intensive close reading, clear explanation of difficult texts, literary criticism and theory, interdisciplinary interpretation, and systematic preparation for well-argued university examination answers. Students have also joined through referrals from best university professors.


His teaching combines syllabus-oriented and examination-oriented preparation with interdisciplinary interpretation. P Das connects literary texts, wherever relevant, with history, philosophy, politics, society, culture, mythology, linguistics, psychology, anthropology and contemporary literary theory, because these areas are often indispensable for understanding meanings that cannot be reached through plot-summary or isolated textual explanation alone.

This method closely suits the present CU BA English Honors and MA English syllabi. The current Honors program progressively introduces literary theory and advanced critical study and includes Research Methodology & Essay Writing in Semester 8. The MA program itself combines literature with socio-cultural and linguistic theory, language studies, historical and global contexts, and preparation for further research.

His interdisciplinary teaching is supported by active research. His work has been presented at international academic conferences in the USA, Italy, Spain, South Korea and China, as well as at premier Indian universities and institutes, in areas including philosophy of literature and language, linguistics, mythology, gene–culture evolution and evolutionary-psychological approaches to human culture. This research enables P Das to explain how myths, symbols, linguistic patterns, human behavior, social structures and historical conditions shape literary meaning, helping students move from surface explanation towards deeper critical interpretation.

His academic base remains English literature, literary criticism and literary theory. His 2011 book, Vibrant Voices from American Poetry (ISBN 978-81-88453-24-5), is an academic and critical work examining cultural, stylistic and linguistic features of major American literary texts. He conducts his present research independently, outside a formal university affiliation.


Study Materials & Independent Writing

Students receive a printed handout for every class on Core Intensive Class, together with carefully researched notes and supplementary study materials relevant to the CU examinations. This allows them to concentrate on explanation, discussion and critical thinking instead of spending the class hurriedly copying notes. At the same time, students are strongly encouraged to develop and write their own answers and interpretations; original arguments are especially appreciated and guided for improvement.

Monthly Class Structure

Every student attends 4 Core Intensive Classes per month, concentrating on the immediate CU syllabus: intensive textual explanation, close reading, relevant historical and theoretical contexts, critical interpretation, examination questions and effective answer construction.

Students may additionally attend up to 3 Advanced Academic Sessions per month, according to semester. These optional sessions are included in the programme and are not repetitions of the Core Classes. They are intended for students seeking deeper literary theory, interdisciplinary interpretation, wider scholarly reading, independent critical thinking and research training.

Interested students are gradually introduced, from the early stages of their university career, to research questions, scholarly sources, critical reading, original argument, academic citation, abstract and research-paper writing, and the academic publication process. Suitable students can therefore begin working towards serious conference or publication-quality research rather than encountering research methods only at the end of their degree.

Core Intensive Classes meet immediate syllabus and examination needs; Advanced Academic Sessions develop deeper scholarship and preparation for independent research.
