Somnath Karmakar

I am (b. 11th September 1989, Malda, West Bengal) an academician, researcher, and development professional in Economics, currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Gour Banga. He holds an M.A. in Economics (Rural Economics specialisation) from Rabindra Bharati University and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Gour Banga.

His professional journey began as District In-Charge at DRCSC, Kolkata (2014–2016), followed by a role as Project Coordinator at DISHA, Kolkata (2016–2021), where he coordinated multi-district programs, training workshops, and data analysis. Since 2021, he has been serving as Visiting Faculty in Economics at Prabhu Jagatbandhu College (University of Calcutta), teaching Economics, Statistics, Business Mathematics, and Business Economics.

Somnath has published extensively in national and international journals and edited volumes (IGI Global, Emerald Publishing, The Indian Economic Journal, Kunal Books). His research focuses on trade policy, monetary policy, rural economics, sustainable development, and digitisation in education. He has presented papers at the Indian Economic Association (IEA) and Bengal Economic Association (BEA) conferences, also serving as Rapporteur and Co-chairperson.

A Life Member of IEA and BEA, and currently Executive Member of BEA (2024–2027), Somnath blends academic rigour with practical development insights.
