When one or more electrons are accepted or rejected by any atom of an element, then ion is formed.
When in atom excess positive charge present that is no of the proton is higher than no of electron then the ion is called a cation, designated as + sign with proper no equal to the no proton excess.
Similarly, if the negatively charged electron is in excess, then it is called anion, represented as - on the atom top right corner with the no of the excess electron.

Anion -- cl-, o2-.
