Electrocyclic reactions are a class of organic reactions where a ring system undergoes opening or closing, typically accompanied by the rearrangement of π-electrons. These reactions are quite intriguing as they involve the breaking or formation of σ-bonds in a cyclic compound.There are two main types of electrocyclic reactions:Ring Opening (Electrocyclic Ring Opening): In this type, a cyclic compound breaks open to form an acyclic compound. A catalyst forms an activated complex with the substrate ( commonly known as transition state which is highly unstable in nature) so the net activation energy of the reaction will decrease. That means reaction will proceed at lower energy. So rate of the reaction will be faster.
